Allied Medical and Health Services offers an intensive Phlebotomy Technician training program that focuses on skills practice and hands on learning.

This course includes 40 hours of lecture and classroom instruction and 58 hours of practical experience. During the practical training portion of the course, students will have to successfully complete 25 skin punctures and 50 venipunctures in order to qualify for certification.

This program takes about four to five weeks to complete and includes both basic and advanced Phlebotomy training.

Once students have completed this program and obtained certification as a Phlebotomy Technician, they may find work in a variety of medical settings including acute care hospitals, physician’s clinics, clinical laboratories and diagnostic clinics.



American University of Medical Technology

The American University of Medical Technology offers a three part Phlebotomy Program that is designed to prepare students to become effective and responsible Phlebotomists.

The program includes 48 hours of lecture and classroom learning and 40 hours of practical experience at local externship sites. The three main topics of training for this course are Basic Phlebotomy, Advanced Phlebotomy and the Phlebotomy Externship.

Students will learn about drawing blood and samples and filing and organizing the samples. They will also learn about non-routine and difficult blood draws.

Beyond the basic Phlebotomy skills, patients will also learn about patients’ rights and medical procedure. Since the Phlebotomist often has the most contact with the patient, and in some cases is the patient’s only contact, Phlebotomy students must learn legal rights and people skills.

The Phlebotomy Technician training program at Crescent College is designed to prepare students to become certified in Phlebotomy Technician I. Students will learn to safely and effectively draw blood samples through venipuncture, finger sticks, heel sticks, and with butterfly needles.

The course is made up of three separate modules. Module I covers universal precautions, infection control, anatomy, medical terminology, skin puncture selection and prep, post puncture procedures, collection equipment, blood collection, and patient identification.

Module II deals with medical waste, biohazard containers, anticoagulation, arterial blood collection, pre-analytical complications and risk factors, ethical behavior, state laws and clinical laboratory improvement amendments.

Module III is an externship where students will practice their new skills and gain hands on experience.
