This option’s curriculum teaches new diagnostic techniques, clinical laboratory technology, and how to use the necessary automated instruments. The curriculum as a whole is designed to teach students in accordance with the procedures established by The National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards.



The curriculum is divided between 80 hours of lecture and lab (held on weekends at Delta College) and over 230 hours of clinical experience, covering at least 8 hours per day on weekdays at various local agencies. Upon the successful completion of this training option, students become eligible to sit for a national licensure exam.



DRM International Learning Center

Grand Rapids Community College

Monroe County Community College offers a phlebotomy training program that is designed to provide students with the skill set that they will need to pursue a career in the medical field. This training option is a certificate program that includes both classroom learning and hands-on laboratory practice that is in place to help students feel confident and efficient in venipuncture and specimen handling. Additionally, there is also a clinical portion of training during which time students will utilize the skills that they have learned in a functioning healthcare facility.

In order to receive the certificate of completion, students must successfully complete both portions of the curriculum. The classroom training will require students to be available 20 hours per week, and during the externship, students must be available 40 hours per week. Mott Community College

At Mott Community College, students can receive training to become competent in the skill of venipuncture. The curriculum consists of 2 Credits and is offered through the Health Sciences Department.

  The program focuses on a diverse set of skills and information that are included to help students obtain the knowledge that they will be expected to have upon entering the workforce. Venipuncture is practiced in depth, and the collection and preparation of various specimens is also covered in the course. In addition, students will become familiar with various lab tests that they will encounter in a functioning laboratory. Oakland Community College offers a phlebotomy training program designed to prepare students for an entry-level position as a phlebotomist. Upon the successful completion of the training, students will receive a certificate of completion. In order to receive the certificate, students must receive a grade of “C” or higher in all required courses. Additionally, graduates can choose to continue and complete an Associate of Applied Science or Certificate in Medical Assisting.

The courses included in the curriculum are: Medical Assisting-Laboratory Procedures, Phlebotomy, Medical Law and Ethics, and Medical Terminology.   The Cardio-Phlebotomy Technician option is a newer course that covers a broader range of topics including: phlebotomy, EKG operation, and I.V. Therapy. The program itself consists of 9 total credits and is divided between two semesters into: Phlebotomy and Phlebotomy Clinical. The courses are only offered during the Summer and Spring semesters, so please keep this in mind when applying.

In order to apply, students must complete the Test of Adult Basic Education prior to admissions.
