Applicants should be aware that background checks for criminal history will be done and students will not be able to begin the clinical practicum without one. The total 5 credit hours are divided into 2 separate courses: Principles of Phlebotomy and a Phlebotomy Clinical. This divided curriculum provides students with a thorough knowledge of phlebotomy and enables them to practice the techniques they have learned in a functioning medical facility.

This training option consists of two terms, and 9 total credit hours.
The first term includes the following classes: Basic Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Terminology, Employment Preparation, and Principles of Phlebotomy. The second term is a Phlebotomy Clinical that is in place to help students utilize the skills that they have learned in a classroom in a functioning medical environment.
In order to apply, students must have a high school diploma or GED and in addition, the college will run a criminal background check prior to beginning the clinical portion of the training.

The training consists of 90 hours and classes are typically offered a few evenings during the week and a few selected Saturdays. The curriculum of this program consists of 64 hours of classroom training, 120 hours of clinical hours, and 8 hours at the end of the program during which time graduates will prepare for a national certification exam. Some topics covered include: health care and delivery terminology, the correct methods of specimen collection, various types of collection equipment, and more.
The total cost of this program is $895.00 and the textbook is not included in the total cost. Also, in order to be accepted into this program, students must have a variety of immunizations (a full list can be found on the school site) and they must be willing to have a criminal background check.
Kirkwood Community College

Location: 6301 Kirkwood Blvd. SW Cedar Rapids, IA 52404At Kirkwood Community College students can receive the training that they will need to pursue a career in the medical field. The course consists of 60 hours of lecture and lab and 80 hours of clinical, during which time students must successfully complete 100 venipunctures and 10 capillary punctures. The hours can be completed in one semester and it is offered during the fall and spring terms.
In order to apply, students must be 18 years of age and they must take the COMPASS Reading Placement Test. In addition, they must have all of the required immunizations and they must submit to an Iowa DCI criminal background check prior to starting clinical. Location: *Location varies, please see site.This is a 3 day phlebotomy training program that consists of a 2 day online training curriculum followed by a hands-on training day that will be given in a designated location. The first two days consists of lessons and quizzes that are given via the internet and can be completed at your own pace. Once students have completed days 1 and 2, they can attend the hands-on training portion in the location provided by the company.
In order to apply, students must have a high school diploma or GED. Upon successfully completing the training, students will receive a Certificate of Completion that can be printed out two days after the end of class by email.
