The Southeast Technical Institute in Sioux Falls, offers a Phlebotomy/Patient Care Technician Program where students can receive a diploma once the program is completed.

This program will prepare students to draw blood specimens as well as properly transport them and test them for the diagnosis of illnesses and diseases. They will also be able to apply tourniquets to arms, locate veins, swab puncture areas and insert needles into veins.







Courses for this program include Computer Essentials, Communication in the Workplace, Basic Anatomy, Medical Terminology, Health Care Human Relations, Patient Care Techniques I, Patient Care Techniques Lab, Introduction to Phlebotomy and Student Success Seminar. Students will complete a total of 31 credit hours.

This program will prepare individuals to collect, transport, handle, and test and analyze blood specimens for the treatment and diagnosis of illnesses and diseases. They will also be prepared to identify equipment, supplies and additives. Students will be trained in infection control, safety policies and procedures, quality control, professionalism, communication skills and more.

This is a 33 credit hour phlebotomy program that can be completed in nine months. Students will take part in classroom lectures, laboratory exercises and a clinical practice.

Students who successfully complete this program will be qualified to work in hospitals, physician offices, clinics, medical laboratories, blood banks and other health care facilities.
