Allied Medical and Health Services offers an intensive Phlebotomy Technician training program that focuses on skills practice and hands on learning.
This course includes 40 hours of lecture and classroom instruction and 58 hours of practical experience. During the practical training portion of the course, students will have to successfully complete 25 skin punctures and 50 venipunctures in order to qualify for certification.
This program takes about four to five weeks to complete and includes both basic and advanced Phlebotomy training.
Once students have completed this program and obtained certification as a Phlebotomy Technician, they may find work in a variety of medical settings including acute care hospitals, physician’s clinics, clinical laboratories and diagnostic clinics.



American University of Medical Technology

The American University of Medical Technology offers a three part Phlebotomy Program that is designed to prepare students to become effective and responsible Phlebotomists.
The program includes 48 hours of lecture and classroom learning and 40 hours of practical experience at local externship sites. The three main topics of training for this course are Basic Phlebotomy, Advanced Phlebotomy and the Phlebotomy Externship.
Students will learn about drawing blood and samples and filing and organizing the samples. They will also learn about non-routine and difficult blood draws.
Beyond the basic Phlebotomy skills, patients will also learn about patients’ rights and medical procedure. Since the Phlebotomist often has the most contact with the patient, and in some cases is the patient’s only contact, Phlebotomy students must learn legal rights and people skills.



Angeles College

Programs Offered: Phlebotomy Technician Certificate Program

Students who want to become a California Certified Phlebotomist Technician I can train at Angeles College and be prepared for certification in a matter of six weeks.
This class includes 80 total hours of training. The first 20 hours will be spent in the classroom for a course called “Basic Phlebotomy.” This is followed by “Advanced Phlebotomy,” another 20 hour long course. After these units have been completed, students will learn and practice their phlebotomy skills in a “Clinical Applications” course. The clinical course is 40 hours long.
Once students have completed all of the training described above, they can apply for certification with the Lab Field Services, California Department of Health.



California School of Health Sciences

California School of Health Sciences offers a Phlebotomy Technician certificate program that may be completed on a weekday or weekend schedule.
This course includes 64 hours of didactic in class instruction followed by 40 hours of clinical training. It is approved by the California Department of Public Health to prepare students to become certified as Phlebotomy Technicians.
In order to apply to this program, students must have a high school diploma or GED, supply proof of certain immunizations, and undergo a physical exam. Being certified for CPR on the health care provider level is optional for this course.
Applications for this course are accepted all year long, but students should contact the school for scheduling and for a full list of program requirements.



Clinical Training Institute

The Clinical Training Institute offers Phlebotomy Technician training programs in five convenient locations.
They have a thorough program that is designed to help students learn the skills they will need to pass the state certification exam and become Phlebotomy Technicians.
Some of the topics that will be covered in the course include the history of Phlebotomy, special collections, point of care testing, non-blood specimens, skin puncture, arterial puncture, specimen collection procedures, equipment, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, infection control, safety, first aid, quality assurance, and legal issues.
This program meets all requirements for state certification with 64 hours of didactic training, 40 hours of clinical training, completion of 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures, and the knowledge you will need to pass the written portion of the state exam.



Crescent College

Programs Offered: Phlebotomy Technician Program

The Phlebotomy Technician training program at Crescent College is designed to prepare students to become certified in Phlebotomy Technician I. Students will learn to safely and effectively draw blood samples through venipuncture, finger sticks, heel sticks, and with butterfly needles.
The course is made up of three separate modules. Module I covers universal precautions, infection control, anatomy, medical terminology, skin puncture selection and prep, post puncture procedures, collection equipment, blood collection, and patient identification.
Module II deals with medical waste, biohazard containers, anticoagulation, arterial blood collection, pre-analytical complications and risk factors, ethical behavior, state laws and clinical laboratory improvement amendments.
Module III is an externship where students will practice their new skills and gain hands on experience.



Harbor Career College

Infotech Career College offers a Phlebotomy Technician training program that is great for busy students because the program lasts for just 6 Saturday class sessions.
This program is designed for those students who have some training background or work experience in the health care field. It is a very hands on program that focuses on training students to be effective Phlebotomy Technicians and to prepare them to start working right away.
There is also an in class component to this course. During this portion of the class, students will learn about infection control, skin puncture techniques, venipuncture techniques, and blood sample collection and processing.
The total cost of this program is $1995.



LA Vocational Institute

Programs Offered: Phlebotomy Certification Program

LA Vocational Institute offers a Phlebotomy Certificate program that may be completed in as little as four weeks.
This 115 hour course covers all of the didactic and clinical training that is required for students to take the state certification exam and become Phlebotomy Technicians. It covers a range of Phlebotomy topics including medical needs, venipuncture techniques, anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system, specimen collection, risk factors and client communication, quality assurance, and documentation.
Once students complete this course and pass the state exam, they may go on to work in a number of different medical settings like hospitals, doctors’ offices, laboratories and testing centers.

Long Beach City College

At Long Beach City College, students can be truly prepared for an entry level position in health care with the school’s intensive Phlebotomy training program. This program takes two semesters to complete and must be completed in consecutive semesters.
The first course in this program is called AH220. This course is taught on campus and is mostly knowledge based. Students will learn all of the information they need to pass the written portion of the state exam and be certified as Phlebotomists. Students will also learn about techniques for drawing blood. They will practice on mannequin arms at first and then they will practice on each other.
The second course in this program is called AH220AD. This is the practical portion of the training. Students will study at a local health care facility and start to gain hands on experience. At least 50 hours of clinical training are required.



Mt. San Antonio College

Programs Offered: Phlebotomy Technician I Program

Students who are interested in becoming Phlebotomy Technicians may train to do so at Mt. San Antonio College. This is a very popular program that involves thorough and intensive training.
The in class learning portion of this course spans 60 hours in total. After completing this program, students must complete 100 hours of hands on clinical training in a real health care facility or laboratory.
On average, this course takes about sixteen weeks to complete. The program length may vary, however, depending on where the student completes his or her externship and how many successful skin punctures and venipunctures they are able to complete.
Students who wish to enroll in this course must do so through a lottery system because of the high demand for enrollment. Tuition is $1600.



Regan Career Institute

Regan Career Institute offers basic and advanced Phlebotomy courses every month so students who are interested in starting their careers in health care can take the first step right away.
These courses involve didactic learning and on the job, real world externship experience.
Some of the topics that will be covered during the in class learning portion of the course include basic anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, basic phlebotomy equipment and procedures, phlebotomy techniques, interpersonal communication, practical phlebotomy, infection control, and the legal aspects of phlebotomy.
Once students have completed the class and the externship, they may take the California state certification exam and go on to become Phlebotomy Technicians.



SoCal Regional Occupational Center

Programs Offered: Phlebotomy Program

At SoCal Regional Occupational Center students can train to become Phlebotomy Technicians and take the state certification exam right on campus.
In order to enroll in this program students must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, complete at least one medical course with a Certificate of Competency, provide notification of Live Scan clearance, provide proof of a negative Mantoux test or chest x-ray within the last six months, provide proof of completing the Hepatitis B vaccine series, provide proof of the Varicella and MMR vaccines, posses a current American Heart Association Basic Life Support for healthcare providers card, sign a waiver and release form and pass a drug screen.
Students must also complete at least 40 hours of externship training to pass this course.



UCLA Center for Prehospital Care

Programs Offered: Phlebotomy Course

The UCLA Center for Prehospital Care offers a thorough Phlebotomy training program that requires no previous medical knowledge or training.
This program runs for eight weeks. For the first two weeks, classes meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. For the next four weeks of classes, students will meet on Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. In addition to these classes, students must also participate in clinical training. The hours for this stage of the course vary.
This course has a 97% pass rate. Students who complete this course can go on to become Phlebotomy Technicians and work in a wide variety of medical and lab settings.
