Avalon Medical Career Academy

Programs Offered: Phlebotomy Program

Avalon Medical Career Academy offers day classes and night classes in Phlebotomy to help prepare students for a rewarding career in health care. The day classes run for 8 weeks and meet Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. The evening classes last for 16 weeks and meet Monday through Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills they will need to become effective Phlebotomists. At the end of the course, students will be eligible to take the state certification exam and become Phlebotomists.

Houston Community College

Programs Offered: Phlebotomy Technician Program

Location: 3100 Main St., Houston, TX 77002

The Phlebotomy Technician training program at Houston Community College involves two different courses. The first is called Phlebotomy. This is a 96-hou-long course that will teach students about what Phlebotomists do and how to perform basic Phlebotomy skills. The second course is Phlebotomy Clinical. This is a 120-hour long course that will give students hands on experience working in a real health care facility or laboratory. There is also an optional review course before the certification exam that is 8 hours long.
All in all, this course costs $1350. Students who wish to enroll must have a high school diploma or GED, attend an information session, initiate the Hepatitis B vaccination series, undergo a specific criminal background check, pass a drug screening, become certified at CPR on the Healthcare Provider level, and be up to date with immunizations.



Lone Star College System

Programs Offered: Phlebotomy Program

Location: 2700 W.W. Thorne Drive, Houston, TX 77073-3499; 20515 SH 249, Houston, TX 77070 and other locations in the Houston area

Students who want to become Phlebotomy Technicians can train at the Lone Star College System as part of the school’s Continuing Education program. The Phlebotomy Technician program is offered at several Lone Star campuses including LSC CyFair, LSC Kingwood, LSC Montgomery and LSC North Harris.
The Phlebotomy program at Lone Star College involves both in class learning and hands on clinical training. It can be taken for credit or not for credit, but those who take the course for credit can use the credits towards other certificates and degrees in the future.
The course includes 216 total hours of training and is broken up into three classes: Phlebotomy- Theory, Phlebotomy- Clinical, and CPR for Healthcare Providers.



Phlebotomy Services

Programs Offered: 3 Day Phlebotomy Training Program

Location: Varies

Phlebotomy Services is a traveling Phlebotomy training program that is designed for medical professionals. This accelerated program takes only three days to complete and will prepare students to become certified as Phlebotomy Technicians.
The first two days of training are completed online. Students will take lessons and quizzes at their own pace to learn the theory of Phlebotomy.
The third day of training is centered around hands on learning and Phlebotomy skills practice. Students will learn about different methods of blood collection like the vacutainer system, syringes, and butterfly needles. They will practice on a training aid and then on a partner in the class. Once students finish this portion of the class, they will receive a certificate of completion.

Pima Medical Institute

Programs Offered: Phlebotomy Technician Program

Location: 10201 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77024

Pima Medical Institute offers a comprehensive Phlebotomy Technician training program for students who want to get their start in the health care field.
This course includes 5 different classes and an externship. The classes include Study Skills, CPR and First Aid, Anatomy and Physiology/ Medical Terminology, Introduction to Laboratory and Communication, and Phlebotomy. In total, these classes include 70 hours of theory training and 70 lab hours. The externship includes 160 additional hours of on the job training to really prepare students for a future in Phlebotomy.
This course takes about three months to complete and is worth 10 credits. Students who complete the program successfully will earn a Phlebotomy Technician certificate. Tuition for this course totals $3,769.



Pro Med Seminars

Programs Offered: 2-Day Phlebotomy Training Certification Seminar

Location: Houston, TX

Professional Medical Seminars offers a two-day Phlebotomy training certification seminar in Houston and a variety of other locations. This is an intensive program that is intended to be taken by medical professionals who want to expand their skills.
The seminar is held Fridays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Some of the topics that will be covered include an overview of the heart and circulatory system, an overview of the antecubital of the arm, blood drawing procedures with venipuncture, butterfly needles and other methods, pre-analytical errors and complications, pediatric and geriatric specialty draws, skin punctures, corrective procedures and proper order of draw, test tubes and additives, and avoiding Phlebotomy-related law suits.
Once the seminar is completed, students will be eligible for national Phlebotomy certification.



San Jacinto College

Programs Offered: Phlebotomy Technician Program

Location: North Campus: 5800 Uvalde, Houston, TX 77049; South Campus: 13735 Beamer Rd., Houston, TX 77089

The Phlebotomy Technician training program at San Jacinto College is comprised of two courses- Phlebotomy Technician Basic and Phlebotomy Technician Practicum.
The Phlebotomy Technician Basic course is designed to teach students all of the basics of Phlebotomy through a combination of theoretical learning and hands on practice. Some of the topics that students will learn about include medical terminology, ethics, professionalism, various methods of skin puncture, infection prevention, proper ID procedures, specimen collection, and more. A textbook is required for this course. The fee for Phlebotomy Technician Basic is $395.
Phlebotomy Technician Practicum is a work-based experience where students will work directly with patients. They will apply the theory and skills learned in Phlebotomy Technician Basic during 120 hours of hands on training. The fee for this course is $175.



Smithwood Medical Institute

Programs Offered: Phlebotomy Training Program

Smithwood Medical Institute offers a thorough Phlebotomy training program to prepare students for their new career in health care.
The program involves 12 units: the history or phlebotomy, quality assurance and infection control, medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology, blood collection equipment and venipuncture procedure, pre-analytical considerations, capillary puncture equipment and procedure, special collections and point-of-care testing, arterial puncture procedures, non blood specimens and tests/ specimen handling, skills lab, and a clinical externship.

Texas Southern University

Programs Offered: Phlebotomy Technician Program

Location: 3100 Cleburne Street, Houston, TX 77004

Texas Southern University offers a Phlebotomy Technician training program that is designed to prepare students to pass the certification exam and become Phlebotomists over the course of eight weeks. This is an evening course that meets from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
This course includes both in class theoretical learning and hands on skills training. The course is split between 96 hours of classroom instruction and 120 clinical hours which will be held in a real health care facility.
The cost of this course is $1200 plus the cost of books. In order to enroll in this program, students must have a high school diploma or GED, provide proof of a Hepatitis B vaccine, and complete a CPR course, a drug screen, and a background check.



The City of Houston Health and Human Services Division

Programs Offered: Phlebotomy Training Program

Location: Third Ward Multi-Service Center, 3611 Ennis Street, Houston, TX

The City of Houston’s Health and Human Services Division offers Phlebotomy training on the first Tuesday of every month from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This is part of the department’s HIV/ STD and Viral Hepatitis Prevention initiative.
The Health and Human Services Division also employs Phlebotomists under this program. The goal is to help test for, treat, and prevent the spread of HIV, STDs and viral Hepatitis.
Phlebotomists are an important part of the medical team. They deal directly with patients and are in charge of taking blood samples and other samples, labeling and organizing the samples, and transporting them for testing.
Students who are interested in this program should contact the Houston Health and Human Services Division for more information and class schedules.
