Location: 1059 Kilauea Ave. Unit B Hilo, HI 96720The Phlebotomy Technician Training Program offered at the Hawaii Institute of Healthcare and Training Services is a forty hours intensive course. Of these 40 hours, about 10% of the time is spent on classroom lecture, and 30% is spent on lab work. In order for students to successfully complete training and qualify for certification, they must complete at least 25 blood draws. Upon completing the training, students will receive a certificate of completion, and they will also qualify to sit for a national certification exam.
There is also an optional externship which can provide students with an additional 40 hours of “hands-on” practice.

Maui Branch-Hale Makua Nursing Facility Wailuku Maui, HI 96793The national phlebotomy certification preparatory program offered here is a 30-35 hour class that focuses on teaching students the principles and skills of phlebotomy. The entire program can be completed in as little as 4-5 weeks, and classes are typically offered in the evening. For those that would like to attend the class in the Maui Branch, the same 30-35 hours of curriculum can be completed in 2 weeks, as the classes run for 4 hours in the evening.
The course is designed for a classroom of 12 students or less, so individuals that would like more individual attention may find this program to be a good option.
The curriculum of this option covers a wide variety of topics which include: venipuncture procedures, urinalysis procedure, specimen documentation, specimen transportation, quality management and legal issues, as well as safety and first aid.
Professional Health Educators

The program lasts 54 to 60 hours, and covers topics like anatomy & physiology, procedures and techniques of venipuncture, infection control, related equipment and supplies, quality control, and more.
University of Hawaii Kapi’olani Community College
Programs Offered: Certificate of Competence in Phlebotomy
Location: 4303 Diamond Head Road Honolulu, HI 96816At the University of Hawaii Kapi’olani Community College, students can attend a two-course phlebotomy training program. Part 1 of this option consists of 64 hours of classroom training, taught on campus. Upon successfully completing this portion with a minimum grade of 70%, students can then begin Part 2 of training, which is a 100-hour clinical internship in a clinic or hospital.
After completing both portions of the training, students will receive a certificate of competence, and in addition, they become eligible to sit for a national certification exam.
The tuition of this option totals $1,085.00 (textbook included) and students must also pay $15.00 for liability insurance.
